TASTE
The Taste EP was my first shot at making a body of work as an upcoming musician, it really was the essence of my origins as a singer-songwriter and guitarist. It was also my first taste of big city life.
So, I had just moved to Johannesburg when I wrote 'Vintage Car', I started busking at a local restaurant/hotel - not too far from the music shop, of course - and gigging with my then housemate and student, Noni as a duo in various intimate spaces.
Not only was I blessed with new friends and started attracting fans, but people from home, thanks to the internet, caught and offered their support as well. A college friend of mine Annemie "Ames" McCallaghan, who also happens to be an artist, made some fan art of us (Noni & I) as well as the artwork for this particular EP.
I met Noni and Ames, both through music. And now, I am not even sure how many people I have met. Social media did have a hand in this, I must say, a very appreciated and overwhelming experience. I guess you could say it was a taste of fame and not so much fortune.
Having said that, I hope that whoever got to experience being in the same room with us or whose lunch hour was accompanied by my then soft, bashful yet consoling voice made a difference, and brightened their day... Much like a cupcake.
And that's a story for another day.
